Thrive as an Empath with Dr. Judith Orloff

Empaths are people who have a high degree of sensitivity to the energy of others. They often feel overwhelmed and drained by the emotions of others, and struggle to set boundaries and protect their own energy. Maria and the Heal Squad team sat with Judith Orloff M.D. to discuss how to thrive as an empath and protect your energy. Dr. Judith Orloff is a psychiatrist, empath, and author who specializes in treating empaths and highly sensitive people. She is the author of several books, including "The Empath's Survival Guide" and "Emotional Freedom," and is a leading voice in the field of empathy and intuition. 6 Tips to Thrive as an Empath with Dr. Judith Orloff

Identify your triggers

As an empath, it's important to be aware of the situations and people that drain your energy. This may include certain types of people (e.g., those who are highly negative or critical), crowded spaces, or intense emotional situations. Once you've identified your triggers, you can take steps to avoid them or protect yourself when you encounter them. For example, you may choose to limit your exposure to certain people or situations or to create a plan for self-care when you know you'll be in a draining environment.

Practice self-care

Empaths need to prioritize self-care in order to maintain their energy and avoid burnout. This might include things like meditation, exercise, time in nature, or creative hobbies. The key is to find what works for you and make it a regular part of your routine. You may also want to pay attention to your physical needs, such as getting enough sleep and eating a healthy diet, as these can impact your emotional and energetic well-being.

Set boundaries

Often, empaths struggle with setting boundaries and saying no to others. It's important to learn to prioritize your own needs and set limits on what you're willing to do for others. This might mean saying no to social invitations that you know will be draining, or setting limits on the amount of time you spend with certain people. You may also want to communicate your needs clearly to others, so they understand your boundaries and can respect them. Also, for those who don’t respect your boundaries (because there will be some), you might want to rethink how much energy you give them at all.

Surround yourself with positive energy

Seek out people and environments that support and uplift you. Spend time with people who are positive and encouraging, and avoid those who are negative or draining. This may mean making new friends or finding supportive communities, such as a spiritual or meditation group. You may also want to create a positive environment at home, by surrounding yourself with uplifting decor, music, and other elements that make you feel good.(Check out these two episodes below with designer Kelli Ellis where she talks about what colors are the most healing for your home & space

Learn to recharge

When you do encounter situations or people that drain your energy, it's important to know how to recharge. This might mean taking a break, going for a walk, or finding a quiet place to be alone. You may also find it helpful to engage in practices that help you connect with your inner self and renew your energy, such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga.

Embrace your gifts

Being an empath can be challenging, but it's also a gift. Embrace your sensitivity and use it to help others. You may find that your ability to tune into the emotions of others allows you to offer comfort and support to those in need. You may also want to cultivate your intuitive abilities, such as through journaling or other practices that help you connect with your inner wisdom. The key to thriving as an empath is to be aware of your own needs and to take steps to protect your energy. By setting boundaries, practicing self-care, and surrounding yourself with positive energy, you can use your sensitivity as a gift to help others and make a positive impact in the world.
