Recently, we talked with Dr. Daniel Amen on the different brain types and how knowing yours could help you fuel your brain the right way! Dr. Amen is an American doctor who practices as a psychiatrist and brain disorder specialist. He is also a New York Times Bestselling author, and the author of the book You, Happier: The 7 Neuroscience Secrets of Feeling Good Based on Your Brain Type. What are the 5 brain types?

Balanced  

People who have balanced brain types are very positive and relaxed. Most anything will make them happy, and they’re very focused, yet flexible.

Spontaneous

These brain types are the risk takers. They are creative, but get easily distracted. If this describes you, you may need novelty and love surprises. You likely find and get along well with persistent people!

Persistent

Having a persistent brain type might mean you like things a certain way. They value ritual and routine, and hate surprises. They also tend to hold grudges.

Sensitive

If you are a sensitive brain type, you likely feel things very deeply and heavily. Sensitive brain types are empathic and need connection to feel sustained.

Cautious

This brain type crave safety. If this is your brain type, you may need to feel safe in what you do, even in novelty.

So, now that we know the 5 brain types, let’s look at the 7 secrets to feeling good.
  1. Know your brain type - Know how your brain functions and what can specifically benefit you!

  2. Get your brain healthy - Practicing things such as limiting time staring at a screen or regular physical activity

  3. Supplement your brain - Certain supplements, like Saffron, boost the brain’s health and therefore boost your mood!

  4. Love food that loves you back - Be aware of which foods can boost your brain health. Try incorporating salmon, blueberries and dark chocolate into your diet!

  5. Master your mind - Automatic negative thoughts enter our brains all the time. When those happen, ask yourself if that is true and if you can know for sure that it is true.

  6. Notice what you like about other people more than what you don’t like (If you want happiness, you have to give happiness away!) - We get to choose if we want to feel inspired or disappointed! Focus on the positives, rather than focusing on the negatives.

  7. Live each day based on clearly defined values, purposes and goals - Purpose makes us happier and makes us live longer. Focus on what you’re passionate about and who and what needs you in life.
