Hello EveryGirl!

If you’ve received this, I’ve met you somewhere in my journey. You’ve read my New York Times Best Selling EveryGirl’s Guide To book series, listened to my SiriusXM radio show, “Conversations with Maria Menounos,” or maybe you just met me waiting in line at the coffee shop. First, this is NOT a solicitation, nor a fan or BS newsletter! This is an extension of my books and radio show: our very own FREE monthly magazine to share all the things that help me in my daily life; i.e. secrets and tips on health, beauty, fashion, fitness, finance, relationships, career success and more. The info I share won’t be because a sponsor is paying me. If you’re a fan of my books, you know I only share TRUE advice and that my career affords me exposure to world leading experts. I’m also looking forward to hearing YOUR solutions, practices and stories that inspire along with feedback and questions.

The purpose? For us to learn, help one another and improve daily, TOGETHER. Why else are we on earth after all? Many of you feel overwhelmed, alone or stagnant and just need the help of a big sister. It’s nothing I haven’t felt. From here on, consider US sisters and consider THIS the start of our sorority. Except unlike other sororities that end after college, the Hello EveryGirl sorority is FOR LIFE. This is our platform to connect, lift, learn, heal and grow.

The best way YOU can help is to simply tell a friend to sign up, too. Today more than ever, EveryGirl needs to help and empower one another. I believe this is an amazing start. I’m excited to share and hope you are, too. Keep reading to the end. There will be a little surprise for you! God bless.

As you may know, my mom, Litsa, is battling stage four glioblastoma, but things have been looking up with her last few MRIs! But it’s not just the chemo pills that are doing the trick. We have mom doing so much to help her beat this illness. From therapy (and the mental aspect), to the Optune arrays (medical device that helps kill cancer cells), check out everything that mom is doing to beat glioblastoma!

*DISCLAIMER: The following are techniques that best help my mom. I am not telling you what is right for your situation – you need to consult with your doctors on any of these practices to see if these techniques may help you.

  • MYERS COCKTAILS: Every couple weeks, mom goes to see Dr. Jonas and his wife Emilia at Cryohealthcare for a Myers cocktail. I’m telling you – Myers’ Cocktails are total game-changers, and not just for cancer patients! A Myers’ cocktail is an intravenous vitamin infusion which enhances the immune system, reduces fatigue, and reduces symptoms of asthma, and helps with migraines, muscle spasm, and allergies. It’s amazing – it increases the blood concentration of vitamins and minerals 50 times greater than what can be achieved when given orally. A small catheter is inserted into a vein and the infusion takes about 20-30 minutes and costs about $160. Cryohealthcare works with compounding pharmacies that are the most renowned, therefore utilizing the highest quality ingredients. Dr. Jonas sticks with the original Myers’ Cocktail recipes, but he also adds a high dose of  Glutathione, therefore, he calls it the “modified Myers’ Cocktail.” I’ve had Myers’ cocktails before too, they really do help boost your energy. I love seeing mom after she has a Myers’ cocktail – she’s so upbeat and she feels great!! Dr. Jonas and Emilia have really changed my family’s lives with the sudden boost of liveliness. Check out their website to get more info on Cryohealthcare: http://bit.ly/2kyiOJJ
And take a look at Cryohealthcare’s social media sites! Instagram: @Cryohealthcare; Twitter: @Cryohealthcare
  • BEMER TECHNOLOGY: This device is the COOLEST! It’s a mat that lies flat on the floor (orbemer in this pic, it’s the mat that is on top of the reclining chair) that mom lays on for 8 minutes, twice a day, and it improves the her blood flow, therefore benefiting the body’s cardiac system. It even helps regenerate abilities and even mental acuity. How does this reclining chair do this exactly? It improves restricted blood flow in the smallest blood vessels and supports the body’s own self healing and generation process! It helps better supply oxygen, nutrients, and it helps disposes metabolic waste – exactly what any human being (especially someone who’s fighting an illness) needs! For more info head to http://bit.ly/2l3VaUk.
  • OPTUNE ARRAYS: This. Is. HUGE. For anyone that’s dealing with glioblastoma, FullSizeRender 6you need this in your life. It’s a wearable and portable FDA-approved device for the treatment of GBM. It is a non-invasive device that delivers alternating electric fields – referred to as Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) – that target dividing cancer cells, which may cause cell death. Optune is a portable delivery system designed to allow patients to go about their daily activities while receiving treatment. Optune delivers therapy through 4 adhesive patches, called transducer arrays. These transducer arrays are applied to the scalp and are connected to the device and battery. Studies show that there is an unprecedented 70% increase in survival rate with TTFields plus temozolomide (chemotherapy) versus temozolomide alone at 4 years.Luckily, these arrays are covered by my mom’s insurance and hopefully it will be covered for you too (should you try this)! You can find more information at https://www.optune.com/
  • LEMON JUICE: Dad uses this trick that an old Greek doctor from the village shared swears by for anyone with cancer. It’s a mixture of freshly squeezed lemons and water – simple as that! Read dad’s trick below:
“The first three days, squeeze one lemon and drink one glass of water. After three days, you squeeze two lemons, and follow it with two glasses of water for three more days. And after that, squeeze three lemons with three glasses of water and do this for the rest of the days – there’s nothing stopping us from keeping my wife healthy!!!”
*TIP: Be sure to brush your teeth immediately because lemons are very acidic and will strip your teeth of enamel. Again, please consult with your doctor as this isn’t right for everyone.
  • OSTEOPATHOLOGY: Mom also sees Vicky Vlachonis, an Osteopath/Pain Expert who helps heal her body. Read the excerpt below from Vicky on how she helps Litsa:
“Many cancer patients use bodywork to reduce symptoms, improve coping and enhance quality of life. The purpose of my treatments with the lovely Litsa is to empower her by balancing her mind and body. By combining craniosacral therapy and other osteopathic techniques with acupuncture, reflexology, and myofascial release using active soft tissue release, it reduces restrictions on specific muscles and promotes lymphatic drainage. All of these modalities help to calm her sympathetic nervous system. When one is in pain, they tend to be stuck in their mind and overstimulated. These natural alternative healing methods help her mind feel at ease, keep the digestive system working smoothly and encourage her overworked, fight-or-flight adaptive response to stay more in the parasympathetic nervous system—a peaceful state. Studies have even shown that bodywork has short-term benefits on psychological well-being. So, although Litsa is battling a physical condition, it is imperative for her mental state to be spirited and sound!”
    You’ve gotta check out Vicky’s website: http://www.vickyvlachonis.com/
And take a look at Vicky’s social media sites! Twitter: @VickyVlachonis; Instagram: @vickyvlachonis
  • HYPNOTHERAPY: Mom meets with a hypnotherapist named Carrie Freeman weekly. She is such a bright light – her therapy tactics have been so beneficial to mom, read about how Carrie helps mom in her own words!
“When I met Litsa, my very first goal was to take her OUT of the ancient “fight-or-flight” condition, which, in modern man, causes any one of the following: Anxiety, depression, anger, panic and high sensitivity (other things as well, i.e. insomnia, irritability, forgetfulness, etc.).  This occurs when we are hit with shock, loss, trauma or sudden change. Certainly, all of that comes with a cancer diagnosis. After our first meeting, I began to facilitate more detailed methods – through guided imagery and hypnotic suggestion, one of my goals for Litsa was/is to create new neural pathways for healing and shrinking the tumor. Building new pathways seeks to enhance our mind/body connection; as well as healthier choices, and behaviors. When in hypnosis, the subconscious mind believes what is suggested! For every session, I record a 15-minute, MP3 for her to listen to in between our sessions – as repetition is key to absorbing benefits.Sessions normally begin with talk therapy. Although we discuss deep issues, I often want to know what was good about her previous week, asking things like, “Did you walk?” “Did you laugh?”  “Anything good happen?”  I always seek to reinforce what is working and what feels good because the subconscious mind responds to these prompts.
Hypnotherapy is impactful in many situations – In Litsa’s case, maintaining physical, emotional and mental homeostasis, allows her immune system to strengthen, and her body to restore. It enhances all her medical treatments.  She is doing great.”
For the record, I work with a hypnotherapist as well and have seen huge results. More on that in an upcoming newsletter! For more info on Carrie and her practices, head over to http://carriefreeman.com/.
If you want to get in touch with Carrie, email her at hypnocarrie@gmail.com, or feel free to call her business phone at 818-753-3356.
  • SHAMAN HEALING: Mom also visits April, who is a shaman healer who helps dig deep into mom’s soul to bring subconscious issues to light. Read about how April works with mom below:
“My oath as a shaman is to keep and expand my culture’s consciousness and to help clients, in this case to help wonderful Litsa, as she relates to the earth she lives within, the universe she belongs to, and to remind her of her innate ways of thriving. To give you a metaphor for what this means when you’re in a healing session, think of it this way: Your entire being (spiritual, mental, physical, karmic, astral and emotional) body is like a huge, enormous walk-in closet.  This closet contains every single piece of clothing and accessories that you have had throughout your entire life… until you clean it out. On top of that, now imagine the entire contents of the closet being on your physical body right now.  Sheesh right?! You would be so tied down, weighted, off balance and almost incapable of moving with all of that on you. So what do all of these things in the “closet” represent? Well they can be painful memories, childhood wounds, heartbreaks, fears, certain people, patterns, archetypes, family ancestry and beliefs just to name a few. Over time these “closet” items often create dis-ease in the entire being and can then sometimes create disease in a physical body. So what Litsa and I are doing is unraveling, investigating, rummaging and clearing out everything in her “closet”. As each piece is thrown out, detached, understood or integrated more of her beautiful soul is able to shine through her physical body. Think how you feel when you clean out your closet, garage, or a room in your home. Liberated, lighter, relieved… free! It’s exactly the same for a person going through their own spiritual and energetic closet. Clearing out the “closet” allows the soul light to begin shining through, creating more space and a firmer, clearer foundation for the physical body. The physical body, then if it so chooses, has the space to do what it does innately- regenerate, heal, thrive and remember who it really is, which is  a powerful, loving, peaceful soul that is limitless!”

  • mom-1ACTIVITIES: It’s important to keep mom’s brain stimulated. Just because she’s battling this illness, it doesn’t mean sitting on the couch watching TV is the best thing for her – in fact, it’s important for her to keep moving and keep her mind busy, which is where art therapy comes into play. The other day, our friend Ashley took mom to a painting class called Pinot’s Palette. Although the place served wine, mom didn’t have any as she’s on a strict diet limiting her sugar intake. It’s important for her brain to be stimulated, that’s why painting classes, pottery classes, cooking classes, flower crown classes, anything that gets mom out of the house is such great therapy! Check out these paintings mom and Ashley made, and for more info on Pinot’s Palette, click: https://www.pinotspalette.com/
  • KETOGENIC DIET: We got mom on the KETO diet. As stated earlier, this diet limits her sugar intake. Read more about the diet and why it’s great for people dealing with tumors from LJ Fitzpatrick, our friend and registered dietitian.
“The ketogenic diet is a very low carbohydrate, high fat diet that switches your body’s metabolism from burning carbohydrates to burning fat. By eating a high proportion of fat every day, the body has no other option but to use it as a fuel source. The by-product of fat metabolism is called ketone bodies. When your body has a high concentration of ketone bodies and very low glucose, or blood sugar, this is what we call ‘ketosis.’ So now how does this positively affect Litsa, aside from her being able to eat all of her favorite foods like olive oil, olives, feta, and fish? Normal brain, muscle and the liver cells have the capacity to use ketone bodies as an alternative fuel source. However, most cancerous cells lack the ability to use ketones as fuel, essentially cutting off a large portion of its nutrients. There are studies showing that this diet is also anti-inflammatory, turning off some of the pro-inflammatory pathways, which could also be helping with the tumor burden. This diet has been around since the 1920s, it started in the Mayo Clinic for epilepsy, so it has been deemed safe to use only under medical supervision. This is a pretty tough diet to follow, but Litsa has taken the challenge full on and has taught ME so much, especially that Feta really is betta! –LJ Fitzpatrick MS, RD”
For more info on the KETO diet, download the “MyKeto” app from the app store. It’s perfect for helping guide you throughout your meals.
  • THERAPY SUPPORT GROUPS: Mom visits a location a couple times a week in Sherman Oaks, California called WeSpark. It’s a nonprofit center that offers free support groups, integrative therapies, and creative and educational workshops to all of those whose lives have been affected by cancer. In fact, this is a place that dad can attend with mom, and even Keven or I can stop by as well. My assistant, Kellie, has even gone too! Mom gets exposed to other people who are dealing with cancer. Major takeaways are that we all get to learn how to talk about cancer and how to cope with cancer. Cancer affects everyone differently and being able to talk about it openly is so healthy. Although WeSpark is only in Southern California, there are plenty of cancer support organizations all across the country. To learn more about all of the practices and therapy offerings at WeSpark, visit http://www.wespark.org/.

Let me help change your financial life with minimal effort, tapping into the power of compounding. I don’t know why more people don’t know about this. But please listen. Assuming an 8% return, a mere $2 investment every day could rack up to $221,000 in a matter of 40 years… or if you put in $20 a week to your bank, $1000 away a year, it’s going to yield $303K 40 years from now by making that small shift! And how about this – if you put away $100/week that’s $5,200/year. Assuming an 8% return, that $100/week turns into approximately $1,500,000 in 40 years. How does that sound to ya? Little tweaks to one’s spending can have a huge impact and bring certainty during retirement years! Listen to this episode with a notebook and a pen as Ajay and I give you exact instructions on how to do it: http://bit.ly/2kOfXc0

Most of us don’t know much about our financial life and we leave it in the hands of others because we don’t know enough and we don’t feel confident. If you read this book, you will gain the confidence and feel the power to make life-altering decisions so you are really working towards a financially free future. I’ve made so many new changes and adjustments that have changed everything for me since reading this book, whether it was remortgaging my house to “interest only,” or tapping into the power of compounding, I’m setting myself up for a big win! I have Tony Robbins and his book Money: Master The Game to thank for this wealth of information.

You can purchase a copy of his book on his website at https://moneymasterthegame.com/order or you can buy it straight from Amazon for $15.58!

Listen to the three interviews I’ve done with Tony on “Conversations with Maria Menounos” by clicking these links: here, here, & here.

Let’s keep talking!

My Newest Morning Habit – I used to wake up by using my phone and reading emails, texts and scrolling through social media. I would be late getting out of bed and it would set me up for a very stressful morning. Having to respond to all of those urgent emails stressed me out. Now, I don’t look at my phone until I’m actually in the right state and ready to take care of business. Generally that’s after I’ve eaten breakfast. Try it and let me know if it’s working for you too by emailing me at conversationswithmaria@gmail.com or to share your morning habit tips!

I also prime for 10-15 minutes, using Tony Robbins’ priming techniques and I think of three things I’m grateful for and three things that I’m working towards. Whenever possible, I take a little walk in the mornings with my parents to catch up with them. There’s just something special about being out in nature and breathing the fresh air. Yes, it requires me to wake up earlier but it’s so worth it because it sets my day up for success.

BONUS: In the EveryGirl’s Guide to Life, I have a full workout for us lazy ladies who love our comfy beds stretching in bed, even a little goes a long way.

How do you get your day started?

ESSIE GEL COUTURE: My secret to no-chip nails – I can get a full 12 days without a chip! Essie Gel Couture is my new favorite nail polish – it goes on exactly like a regular coat of nail polish and comes off like a regular coat, but instead of having to go get gels and causing extreme damage to your nails (not to mention wallet), they last longer than the average coat and they look magnificent! You don’t need a lamp, they come in 48 different colors, and they’re only $11.50! Good news is, you can find Essie Gel Couture nail polishes at almost any drugstore or manufactured store, like CVS, Target, Ulta, and hey, you can even buy them on Amazon here.
*TIP: Try not to do too much after you’ve applied this nail polish so your fingers can really dry.

QUICKTAN: Say bye-bye to tanning beds and hello to the easier quick and easy self-tanner! Body Drench Quick Tan is absolutely genius. I’ve gotten all of my friends hooked on this, from Kim K to my next door neighbor – everyone loves this quick tan spray! The cool thing is, you can pick which shade suits you best, it has a tinted formula so you can see where exactly you’re applying it, and boom, a natural, sunless tan appears in a matter of 3-5 hours! I use this so often – even my trip to Mexico over New Year’s, I sprayed myself so I looked a little sunkissed without having to be exposed to the rays from the sun! They even have it travel size so it’s so easy to bring with you wherever you go! I buy all of my bottles online, Amazon offers a great price – $25 for three bottles! IPAD PRO / NEW APP: You may have heard me rave about it on my radio show all the time: the freaking iPad Pro. I’ve never been so fascinated and impressed with technology before! The iPad Pro is more than the next generation of iPad — it’s an uncompromising vision of personal computing for the modern world. It puts incredible power that leaps past most portable PCs at your fingertips. It makes even complex work as natural as touching, swiping, or writing with a pencil. And whether you choose the 12.9-inch model or the new 9.7-inch model, iPad Pro is more capable, versatile, and portable than anything that’s come before. In a word, super. I’ve probably sold more of these than Apple employees  for no commission because I love it so much and I hope it helps you! I think most busy professionals carry notebooks for meetings, to-do lists, etc. This iPad Pro has allowed me to go paperless and have a million notebooks in one device. My problem was always “what do you do when your notebook gets filled up but you still need to access it? What do you do, carry 10 notebooks each time?” Not anymore!! It’s all condensed into one iPad. The 9.7 inch display iPad Pro is about $599 at the Apple Store, but you can purchase it cheaper at Target for only $499: http://bit.ly/2lbTINP

And one app that has changed my life and has been a total game-changer:

GOODNOTES: I have this app called GoodNotes. GoodNotes helps me organize all of my projects I’m working on. This app lets you take beautiful handwritten notes and annotate PDF documents. The handwritten notes are searchable and are created using a pioneering vector ink engine. Thanks to iCloud sync, the documents in GoodNotes will synchronize between your iPad and iPhone automatically. This is why I’m obsessed!! These are some samples from my iPad Pro for the different projects I’m working on.

IMG_9692IMG_9690 IMG_9691

I can click on the folder and take more notes for various meetings or write notes to myself for anything I may want to work on. It’s like my whiteboard but on my iPad. Whether it’s my network, AfterBuzz TV, Conversations with Maria Menounos, or my to-do notes, I can take notes directly in the correct folder. GoodNotes can be bought in iTunes for $7.99.

Add your obsessions here!

This is by far my favorite hair trick ever. I cannot tell you how many people intend to simply highlight their hair and end up using bleach, therefore damaging their hair!! Bleach does horrible things to hair. Dimitris Giannetos, my glam guru, walked me through the process of highlighting hair the healthy way, using no bleach! Check out the video on my YouTube page by clicking the pic to the left and let me know what you think! Like, comment, and review!!

EXACTLY HOW I SAVED MY DEAD, RUINED HAIR:

glam

[av_hr class=’custom’ height=’50’ shadow=’no-shadow’ position=’center’ custom_border=’av-border-thin’ custom_width=’100%’ custom_border_color=” custom_margin_top=’30px’ custom_margin_bottom=’30px’ icon_select=’no’ custom_icon_color=” icon=’ue808′ font=’entypo-fontello’]

  1. First, chop your hair! I cut mine to a place where my dead ends no longer existed. For me that was above my shoulders.
  2. I use Unite moisture cream & oil. A pump of oil and quarter or so sized amount of cream on wet hair. Do not towel dry hair but you can wrap in a towel. Then add oil and cream. Let hair air dry… If it doesn’t air dry pretty start wearing buns and ponytails!
  3. Remember to take out your pony tail elastic carefully! I used to rip it out and didn’t realize why my hair was breaking in the middle of my head!
  4. Be sure to wash your hair every day or every other day. It is better to put heat on freshly washed hair (of course the goal for a while is no heat at all) but the old school rule of never washing hair only contributes to dead hair because we put product in it, then heat it and then repeat the next day. Terrible damage for your hair!
  5. I Use Alterna overnight hair repair. I use it on the night before I wash – it is non-greasy and awesome!
  6. Take a Biotin supplement daily, but once hair gets well, no need to continue taking Biotin.
  7. Set alarm to remind you to get a haircut every 6 weeks. Don’t let your hairdresser texturize your hair. It makes it less thick and full. Learned that one the hard way! Ask for a blunt cut and your hair will look thicker and healthier!
  8. Don’t use bleach for highlights. Dimitris Giannetos taught me to use hair color instead. It’s much easier on hair and works just as well! Check out my Instagram @mariamenounos to see my color!
  9. Never let anyone blow dry your hair with the blow dryer directly on your hair!
  10. Make sure to always brush your hair from the ends up.
  11. Use a hair mask once or twice a week. There are many good ones out there. My favorite is from Kérastase.
  12. Do all of this until your hair gets healthy and then continue on with it! It took me almost a year to get it long but it got healthy pretty quick!

Let’s chat more – what are some of your amazing hair tips?

[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=”]
Our apricot poodle Noelle was our first official rescue, our littlest angel, a gift from God, the greatest of inspirations and a member of our family we shall always miss. Back in early 2000, Kev and I were just starting out in LA. We had 40 dollars in our checking account and no family to help save us, Baby, and Benny, our two bichons. Literally, for a cacophony of reasons, our families had disowned us. It was Christmas and we were both sad. One of the things that always uplifted us was volunteering at the animal shelter where we would walk, groom, socialize, help to adopt and love on all the babies there. I remember seeing a new check-in – a quivering apricot poodle hiding in the back of a kennel. I snatched her up and ran up to Kev.  She had been well cared for and we surmised she probably had an elderly owner who died or had dementia. She was so scared – who could blame her? We knew we had to get her out of there – the only thing stopping us was the fact she was 75 dollars to adopt when we only had 40 dollars to our names. That would mean we would have to wait another week which we didn’t want to put her through. Luckily, a kind tech noticed she had been spayed, which brought the price down to 25 dollars. We took her home and it was both the best Christmas present and Christmas we ever had. She became the big sister to Baby and Benny and all was wonderful. However, Noelle’s story did not end there. A year later, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that attacked her joints, leaving her quadriplegic. The vets gave her a few months to live. Others said just to put her down. But Noelle was happy. She was eating and loving us carrying her. Kev kept saying, “if we had a handicapped child, would we give up? Would we put them down?” We noticed she could crawl on her elbows. That was bad because it opened wounds on the elbows. Doctors said the wounds could not be stitched and would never heal. It was another hurdle but we were not about to give up. We got a small plastic tub, padded it and filled it with ocean water Kev got at the beach. In a few weeks, the salt water closed the wounds! In that time, Kev hand-stitched elbow pads for Noelle and a padded body wrap. Kev put the pads on her and we put her in the grass. Voila, Noelle was able to hop on her elbows! My mom took Kev’s prototypes and sewed beautiful velcro matching velour elbow and chest pads, in a variety of colors. Noelle looked like a princess in them. Kev even got her swimming daily. When it was too cold for the pool, he would put her in the tub, attached to a harness, where she would swim in place. This kept her heart and circulation strong. We carried her everywhere we went. Her tail would wag like crazy when she saw her pouch: a doggy BabyBjorn we toted her around in. The other dogs loved and accepted her condition just as we did. As we expanded our family of dog children to five, the four never made a fuss over Noelle getting to sleep with us or leave the house with us and not them. If we tried that on any of the others, they would make the biggest fuss. But not for their big sister Noelle. They knew she was special too and reminded us just how sensitive dogs truly are. We had a running joke in the house, the  “No Poodle Left Behind” policy. No matter what room you were or are in, you can’t leave Noelle behind. She either is with you in her traveling bed or with her brother and sister dogs. Please know this was far from being a one-way street. Besides being fun and playful, anytime you were tired, stressed or depressed, Noelle would curl up on your chest and help you fall asleep. There was no better cuddler in the world than Noelle.

Noelle’s amazing story didn’t end there, however. Our little cuddle bug, incredibly, had one more mission to fulfill.  She became a hospital volunteer to sit with and be held by sick children. Noelle made it seven more years with the condition and had to have been 18 years old when she finally passed.  We mourn her to this day but her spirit and memory lives on in our family.  We will never forget the greatest Christmas gift we ever received.  We will never forget Noelle.

Question: I want to know since you’ve been in such a strong relationship with Keven for nearly 20 years, what’s your secret to keeping the spark alive and maintaining a healthy relationship?

Maria: Ooh, good question! Well, the spark will come and go… it takes work. I think people assume it’s all sunshine and rainbows, well, it’s not! We fight, we have had our ups and downs, but what remains is the core ingredient – we are best friends. We have each other’s back ALWAYS. And when we get mad at each other, we don’t let it fester long. And generally the wrong one (Keven, hahaha kidding!) will apologize. I also think it’s important to never compare your relationship with others. Everyone is different and everyone values different things. Again, the core ingredients generally remain – trust and respect. And remembering it’s a two-way street. Hope this helps!

Question: You have the best fashion sense, what inspires you and how do you pick your outfits?

Maria:  Thank you so much! My assistant recently asked this as well and also asked if I always had good style. It led me to a breakthrough… I’ve logged more than 10,000 hours in fashion over the last 17 years being on TV. I think that’s why I’ve gotten better and better at it. I wasn’t always great though. I’ve always looked to magazines and celebrities of course for inspiration. As you can imagine, they’ve logged their hours too so clipping magazine photos and hanging them in the closet or the area where I get ready always helps me when I’m stumped for an outfit idea. I recommended this in my first book The Everygirl’s Guide to Life and have my actual photo wall featured in there. I choose my outfits daily generally by how I’m feeling – comfy or formal. Weather also plays a big role.

Question: What internally or externally continues to push you to grind daily?

Maria: Wow, well right now I’m inspired to make some BIG changes in my life and that is really pushing me to grind harder than ever. But normally, it’s probably the same as others… fear, fear of failure, not being able to provide for my family… that kind of thing. Ever since I was little I dreamed big. I always say, cleaning nightclubs and dodging rats and cockroaches made it clear it was only up from there! The fact that I made it, and I can see that if I’m willing to work hard I can still make new dreams possible, it’s incredibly inspiring for me.

Question: What is the last thing you splurged on and what is something you’re working on?

Maria: My home office was my last splurge. I really splurged on custom furniture and I’m so excited! It was the best thing for me as I needed new inspiration and a womancave with everything going on at home with my mom’s illness. It’s my safe space, my creative hole, and I am cranking out so much that it has already paid for itself! Next? Well, another vacation perhaps? hahaha

My assistant Kellie is obsessed with baking. She’s constantly bringing desserts to my family, the E! News crew, and the hosts and engineers at my network, AfterBuzz TV. Check out her latest video on how to make peanut butter chocolate chip mug cakes! All you need is five minutes to spare and six popular ingredients that can most likely already be found in your kitchen – super easy!

In your days ahead, when things happen to you or obstacles arise, remember what Tony Robbins says. “Life is happening FOR us, not TO us.” Most, if not all of the time, bad things that occur are blessings and opportunities. If you see life as happening for you, not to you, rather than be in victim mode, you will see and experience these opportunities and blessings. My mom’s cancer has led to umpteen blessings too long to list. The more I remember this sentiment, the more it rings true.
