Women’s Day content director Meaghan B Murphy is always in search of her next ‘Yay!’, whether that be running content at Women’s Day Magazine, finishing a draft for her upcoming book, prepping for another appearance on the Today Show or Live w/ Ryan and Kelly, or even running her household with three crazy but lovable kids! But even amidst all of that business, Murphy STILL knows she needs to make time for sunshine, and because of that, she has a long list of ways that we can keep our summer fun, even amidst an ever-growing global pandemic.

Team Murphy had a “reel” 🎥 good time throwing an outdoor movie night for @hodaandjenna 🍿 My favorite idea was the popcorn trellis, but I’m getting so much love for my romper. It’s @crosbybymollieburch & Charley is in @boden_clothing 🍋 🍿 🎥 Link in bio to watch the show and I’ll add a swipe up in my Story for the WD feature with printable tickets! 🍿 We did it @carecarlson & @sclagett 😘 #diy #diyprojects #backyardfun #momhacks #todayshow #movienight #outdoormovienight #boden #ootd
On Maria Menounos’ daytime show Better Together With Maria Menounos, Murphy excitedly shared TONS of way that can keep our social lives (and our sanity) in tact, even while social distancing. Here are three amazing takeaway suggestions, courtesy of Meaghan, whom Maria herself has dubbed “Queen Of The Sunshine Committee.”
Want to run around, play a classic outdoor throwback game, and still maintain your CDC recommended six feet of distance? The answer is simple. Flashlight Tag! Flashlight tag is just like regular tag, but instead of physically tagging your competitors to determine who is “it,” you simply use flashlights! Tag, you’re “lit!”
RENT A WATER SLIDE
Yep, you read that correctly. For her own daughter’s birthday, she rented an 18-foot water, set it up in the backyard, and set her family up for an amazing day of “yay!” Strategically, she rented the slide during the MIDDLE of the week, which saved her a ton of dough, especially when the whole world is penny-pinching during the pandemic. Murphy herself said it best: “You can’t turn double digits during quarantine with out a cotton candy machine and a water slide in the Backyard!”
HOST AN OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT
We’ve saved the best for last. Now you can host your own backyard movie night, and believe it or not, you can do it for cheap. By jerry-rigging a $10 plain white shower curtain to a curtain rod and some plant holders, Murphy made a perfectly great movie screen, buying a solid projector on amazon (they’re $80 people!), and using pool inflatable as social distance seating, you too can host your very in outdoor drive-in extravaganza! And for you adults, DON’T WORRY, there will be a reserve seating section, and there WILL be booze.
