Question: I want to know since you’ve been in such a strong relationship with Keven for nearly 20 years, what’s your secret to keeping the spark alive and maintaining a healthy relationship?
Maria: Ooh, good question! Well, the spark will come and go… it takes work. I think people assume it’s all sunshine and rainbows, well, it’s not! We fight, we have had our ups and downs, but what remains is the core ingredient – we are best friends. We have each other’s back ALWAYS. And when we get mad at each other, we don’t let it fester long. And generally the wrong one (Keven, hahaha kidding!) will apologize. I also think it’s important to never compare your relationship with others. Everyone is different and everyone values different things. Again, the core ingredients generally remain – trust and respect. And remembering it’s a two-way street. Hope this helps!
Question: You have the best fashion sense, what inspires you and how do you pick your outfits?
Maria: Thank you so much! My assistant recently asked this as well and also asked if I always had good style. It led me to a breakthrough… I’ve logged more than 10,000 hours in fashion over the last 17 years being on TV. I think that’s why I’ve gotten better and better at it. I wasn’t always great though. I’ve always looked to magazines and celebrities of course for inspiration. As you can imagine, they’ve logged their hours too so clipping magazine photos and hanging them in the closet or the area where I get ready always helps me when I’m stumped for an outfit idea. I recommended this in my first book The Everygirl’s Guide to Life and have my actual photo wall featured in there. I choose my outfits daily generally by how I’m feeling – comfy or formal. Weather also plays a big role.
Question: What internally or externally continues to push you to grind daily?
Maria: Wow, well right now I’m inspired to make some BIG changes in my life and that is really pushing me to grind harder than ever. But normally, it’s probably the same as others… fear, fear of failure, not being able to provide for my family… that kind of thing. Ever since I was little I dreamed big. I always say, cleaning nightclubs and dodging rats and cockroaches made it clear it was only up from there! The fact that I made it, and I can see that if I’m willing to work hard I can still make new dreams possible, it’s incredibly inspiring for me.
Question: What is the last thing you splurged on and what is something you’re working on?
Maria: My home office was my last splurge. I really splurged on custom furniture and I’m so excited! It was the best thing for me as I needed new inspiration and a womancave with everything going on at home with my mom’s illness. It’s my safe space, my creative hole, and I am cranking out so much that it has already paid for itself! Next? Well, another vacation perhaps? hahaha
